4. Hiram of Tyre, Chief Bronze Engineer (7:13-45)

Attention is here given again to the Temple, more particularly to its bronze furnishings.34 What appears to be an interruption when details are given about Solomon's palace may now be understood as an indirect suggestion that these other royal buildings along with the Temple made up the whole Temple-palace complex. Thus it is not an interruption after all.

This passage has difficulties, such as technical terms whose meanings are lost, and differences between the Hebrew and the Greek texts. The reader is referred to Keil, The Books of the Kings, pages 95-118, which remains one of the better detailed treatments of this passage. Another helpful source is ISBE, V, 2940-42. Considerable light has been shed on this passage through archaeological research.

The selection of Hiram (13) was on the basis of his reputation as a skilled and able artisan. He was from Tyre, the same city as Hiram the king (5:1); however, he is not the same person. His mother was an Israelite from Naphtali, a northernmost tribal area which bordered along Phoenicia; this explains how she had come to marry a Tyrian. Her widowhood may have been a secondary consideration in the selection of her son. He came to king Solomon, and wrought all his work (14).
